Two Sheffield Police Department officers have been shot and a suspect has been shot in Muscle Shoals, according to Colbert County Sheriff Frank Williamson.

Another person is dead, he said.

The suspect has been identified as Brian Lansing Martin. Martin was convicted of manslaughter for killing his father in 2013. He is in stable condition at Huntsville Hospital.

Williamson said the incident began as a chase and ended in a shooting.

Helen Keller Hospital says one of the Sheffield officers "will be OK," and one officer is being treated at Huntsville Hospital. That officer's condition is reported as critical.

Neither officer's name has been released.

The Muscle Shoals Police Department posted this on Facebook: "Large Police presence behind Southgate Mall and East Avalon Ave between John R St and Gusmus Ave. Please avoid the areas. ALL MSPD Officers are fine."

The State Bureau of Investigation is taking over the investigation, which is standard practice whenever crimes involve members of law enforcement.

Sheffield police tell Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é that members of the Florence Police Department and Colbert County Sheriff's Office are assisting with law enforcement.
