Delegate Martha Sherrod reacts to Biden's decision to withdraw from 2024 presidential race.

Alabama Democratic delegates are weighing in on President Joe Biden ending his bid for re-election.

The president endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris shortly after he announced his removal from the 2024 race, which other elected Democrats are expected to follow suit.

Alabama Democratic delegate and member of the State Democratic Executive Committee Martha Lynn Sherrod says this is a historic time in politics.

“It was shocking,†former Judge Sherrod said. “I was saddened for President Biden. Now of course once I heard that he had actually endorsed Vice President Harris, I became so excited.â€

Sherrod says Biden has released his delegates and recommended they support Harris. But as of right now, they can vote for anyone of their choosing.

This is because of a that states delegates pledged to a presidential candidate shall reflect the sentiments of those who elected them.

So even though President Biden won the Democratic presidential nomination in Alabama's primary elections, Alabama Democrats do not technically have to vote for him.

Sherrod remains optimistic for the 2024 presidential election saying the democratic leadership in all 50 states have already indicated their support for Vice President Harris.

“His passing the torch to Vice President Harris is exciting,†Sherrod said. “She’s qualified, she’s ready, she’s an intellectual, she is a consummate professional, so I’m excited about what her presidency is going to bring.â€

Sherrod says with Harris now in the picture, she thinks the excitement will bring even more people to the polls than expected.

“There were a group of younger voters that had said they were a little disenchanted with there being only two old men on the ballot, now they have an option available to them,†Sherrod said. “I think people of color will turn out in record numbers and we certainly have the numbers registered to vote in the state of Alabama that can impact this state completely.â€

As for what we can expect at the Democratic National Convention in August, Sherrod says a lot of things are up in the air. She says an open convention would be unprecedented and a new venture for Democrats.
