Decatur citizens pleading for answers from city leaders

Decatur City Council

Decatur citizens at Monday's city council meeting were calling for the jobs of Mayor Tab Bowling and Police Chief Todd Pinion.

They were demanding answers and pleading for transparency, upset that nothing has been done and feeling like the city of Decatur is failing its residents.

Family members of 16-year-old Jaiden Dejarnett were there. He was the teenager who died in a car chase involving the Decatur Police Department back in September, the same month Steve Perkins was shot and killed.

According to Jaiden's grandfather, it even included one of the same officers involved in the shooting death of Steve Perkins.

Various people who took the stand were very upset with what they say is a lack of accountability from city leaders and Decatur police.

One man says he wants to help bridge the gap between leaders and citizens in Decatur. He wants to organize a march from Ingalls Harbor to the Decatur Bridge on Highway 20 on Veterans Day. He explained his very detailed plan at the meeting, but as of now, that may not be happening.

"I was told at the end of the meeting that it wasn’t a no, but he doesn’t know if he has the officers to cover that. My problem with that is if I looked at that man in his face and I told him we’re coming and get ready, there would be plenty of officers on Highway 20 to cover that so as the chief of police and as the mayor of the city who wasn’t here, how do you not want chance to get along with your community," said Craig Johnson, a Decatur resident.

At the end of the meeting, Pinion was expected to speak, however the meeting was adjourned before that happened. Pinion did share with Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é that he hopes to have some information to share sooner rather than later.
