The Huntsville Police Department Major Crimes Unit arrested 33-year Maurice D’Antonio Chatman on three counts of capital murder following a double murder that led to an hours long standoff Wednesday morning on Mount Charron Road.
Huntsville Police said they responded to a home on the 12000 block of Mt. Charron Road shortly after midnight. Officers say when they arrived at the scene, they saw Chatman leaving the victims’ home. They said he ran from officers and barricaded himself within his own home.
Police setting up a perimeter around Chatman's home, they found two people dead at a home nearby. Authorities identified the victims as 74-year-old Ernest Bragg and 49-year-old Daniel Jones.
Huntsville Police say several attempts were made to apprehend Chatman. He was eventually taken into custody. Â
Michael Johnson with Huntsville Police says they finally apprehended Chatman by breaching through the roof of his home. In a neighbors security footage you can hear gun shots firing on Mount Charron Drive around 12:20am.
Police saw Chatman leaving the home where the two victims were found— deceased-- with gun shot wounds.
Chatman fled police and barricaded himself in his own home until just before noon Wednesday.
One construction worker said he couldn't get to a home on Mount Charron to begin work.
But despite the standoff preventing Vernon McCants from doing his job he was glad to see police on the scene protecting the residents.
“It’s good to see a nice presence of them making sure that the neighborhood is safe and making sure that the neighbors still feel safe where they could come out and not feel somehow their privacy has been invaded," he said.
Authorities say the case remains under investigation.Â
