The Broadway Theatre League is hosting "To Kill a Mockingbird" at the Von Braun Center through Sunday.

Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é sat down with an Emmy award-winning actor who hopes his portrayal of Atticus Finch will speak to the day and age we live in.

"Always remember it, that it was a sin to kill a mockingbird," said Richard Thomas.

More than six decades after making his Broadway debut, actor Richard Thomas took on the role of one of the most beloved characters in American literature – Atticus Finch.

"It's a wonderful story that America loves. It's a good part for me I think. It's a good match," said Thomas.

Since 2022, he's been traveling across the country performing in the national tour of Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird."

"There's a reason that this is consistently voted and polled as the most popular novel by the American public," said Thomas.

He says, even though the Pulitzer Prize winning novel may be set during the Great Depression - we are seeing a resurgence in the push for social justice.

"After George Floyd's murder, it is kind of amazing to bring this show around the country,†said Thomas. “And one of the things that was so extraordinary was Aaron Sorkin started working on this play long before that happened."

Thomas says the play also gives the audience a different look at who Atticus is.

"Rather than giving him the mantle of the white savior in the small town, he's taken him off the pedestal and given him a wonderful vulnerability and a lot to learn, a lot that he needs to be taught, and most importantly of all, a great sense of humor,†Thomas laughed.

Performances are Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Tickets are almost sold out for the five performances, but a few seats remain.

You can buy them at the Broadway Theatre League office at the VBC. You can also buy them or by phone at 256-518-6155.
