Major changes coming to HCS

On Monday night, Huntsville City Schools held a Feeders Pattern Community meeting at Columbia High School. There, they discussed a proposal to students and parents to close three elementary schools and move sixth grade to middle schools, which has been years in the making.

"The district staff worked hard on being transparent and offering a lot of accountability for the district," said Ryan Renaud, Huntsville City Schools Board of Education President.

School officials said the move will happen in about the next seven years.

Renaud said the district is seeking unitary status.

However, some parents felt their kids' schools needed more resources.

"Unitary status means an equitable distribution not only funds but resources to high schools and middle schools and elementary schools throughout all five districts that make up Huntsville City Schools. That was a number one priority from the jump," said Renaud.

Huntsville City Schools Superintendent Dr. Clarence Sutton wanted one thing to be clear: the meeting was to discuss the proposed plans. He said nothing is set in stone just yet.
