Man sentenced to life in prison after attempting to kill police officer in Lauderdale County

A Florence man was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday after pleading guilty to multiple charges.

According to Lauderdale County Assistant District Attorney Angie Hamilton, Chris Kilpatrick pleaded guilty to attempted murder of a police officer, two counts of escape from the jail, escape from work release, and promoting prison contraband.

Back in August 2016, Florence Police Detective Michael Price spotted three people in a stolen truck and pulled them over in front of the Dollar General on Chisholm Road. Kilpatrick, who was riding in the truck, jumped out. Price chased him, and the two struggled. Officials say Kilpatrick was trying to kill him, so Price ended up having to shoot Kilpatrick in the abdomen. He then gave him first aid until an ambulance arrived.

When Kilpatrick pleaded guilty Tuesday, Hamilton says Kilpatrick apologized to the officer he tried to shoot and kill, saying he should not have done that.
