DECATUR POLICE SIGN

Outside Decatur City Hall

Supporters of Steve Perkins are outraged after "Back the Police" signs popped up overnight outside Decatur City Hall.

The signs come after almost three months of protesters demanding change within the Decatur Police Department.

The signs read, "We love the Police" and "#Back the Police".

Neither the Decatur Police Department nor the city of Decatur say they had anything to do with these signs.

Decatur Mayor Tab Bowling came outside city hall Wednesday, telling protesters all signs were set to come down.

“It’s time for us to move on,†Bowling said.

The protesters decided to remove all of the signs that decorated city hall on their own, tearing down both Perkins signs and signs supporting police.

“You can’t tell us to be patient for ALEA to do their job and then turn around and say it’s time to move on,†Perkins supporter Aneesah Saafryah-lige said.

“We’re not moving on," Saafryah-lige continued. "This is a marathon, we have a long way to go.â€

The Perkins family attorney, Cannon Lambert Sr., says he believes in the police but doesn't support bad policing delivered to the Decatur community.

Saafryah-lige says whoever placed the new signs did it to antagonize those in the Decatur community who are still hurting over Steve Perkins’ death.

“Whoever did it thought that it was going to cause some type of reaction to where they could prove their rumors that we've been violent and that we are being chaotic in the community and that’s just not true,†Saafryah-lige continued. “Whoever did it is being divisive and being antagonists.â€

At this time, Bowling says the memorials for both Steve Perkins and Jaden DeJarnett are allowed to stay up.

Bowling says, moving forward, when events are held at Decatur City Hall, signs are still allowed to go up.

But once the events conclude, the signs will have to come down.
